Summer Learning Journey Week 4 - Activities 2

Activity 2: The Plastic Pledge [4 points]

Over the past few decades some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items. Yikes!
Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets, for example, have announced that they will stop giving out plastic bags to customers.  What do you think of this idea? What do your friends and family think? Is it a good idea or not?
For this activity, please ask one member of your family and/or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free.’

On your blog, tell us what they think about Countdown’s decision to stop using plastic bags.
I think it is very good to stop using plastic bags because, people can die by using the plastic bags by putting their head inside the hole. Also it should be stopped because it kills our sea creatures .

  1. Hey Helena

These are great reasons why it was a good idea to ban plastic bags. I hadn't considered the safety aspect at first but it is an important one.

Did you get a chance to ask anyone else in your family what they think of banning plastic bags? What does your family use as an alternative? We always have two reusable bags in our car so that we always have something there when we go to the shops.

    Have a great afternoon.

  2. Hi Helena,
I like your idea because it's random, also the idea of people putting plastic bags over their heads is new and I didn't think of it/I forgot about it. Anyways good work.

Great work and keep it up

  3. Hi Helena,

I think your reason was good, but I dont think many people would put a plastic bag over their head a strangle themselves. But many animals do, and I like how you acknowledged the fact that animals do die from plastic bags and you wanted that to stop.

    Good Work!
