Summer Learning Journey Week 3 - Day 3 Acitvites 1

DAY 3: Taking Flight

Activity 1: Bird of the Year! [4 points]
Aotearoa New Zealand is home to many different kinds (species) of native birds.  Sadly, about a third of our native bird species are at risk of disappearing forever (becoming extinct).
Each year, Forest and Bird New Zealand hold a ‘Bird of the Year’ competition where people can vote for their favourite native bird. This year, the winner was the kererÅ« (or woodpigeon).
Go onto the Bird of the Year website, look through the native birds on the site, and choose one that interests you.
On your blog, write a short description of your bird. Where does your bird normally live? What does your bird normally eat?  Post a picture of the bird underneath your description. Be sure to attribute your picture properly.

I chose this bird because it looks harmful and humble it also looks comfortable to sleep with because it is so fluffy and so smooth to cuddle.
My bird is called "Brown Teal (Pateke)" my bird normally lives in the Waimanu Lagoons, my bird eats fish.

  1. Hi Helena,

I think these little ducks look so adorable! I found out from the Bird of the Year website that this species of ducks have gone from being "nationally endangered" to "recovering". This means that the population of these birds have grown (GREAT NEWS!). To be specific, the numbers have jumped from just 700 birds in the wild to over 2500! Isn't this amazing?

Where you able to find out more information about where these birds usually live? What type of fish do they normally eat?

Looking forward to getting a response from you,
    Susie :)
