Summer Learning Journey Week 2 - Day 5 Activities 1

DAY 5: Wasting Away
Activity 1: Off the Menu
Fishing is a really common activity in New Zealand. In fact, people have fished in New Zealand for centuries. Unfortunately, over the past few decades some people have caught too many fish in one area and left the region without enough fish to refill (replenish) the stocks. When this happens we call the area ‘overfished’ and it is closed to all private and commercial fishing. If people are caught fishing in these areas, they are required to pay a fine (money). The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000.
What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for overfishing?

YES, I do think that this rule is fair because, they are taking the creatures that God has created. The fish wants to stay alive not be dead or be cropped up into bits of piece. Also they should be charged $100 000.

  1. Hello Helena, it's Billy here from the Summer Learning Journey programme.

I'm glad to see you are continuing to work hard throughout the summer and are completing more and more activities.

I also think the rule is fair, even though 100,000 dollars is a lot of money. These people know the rules and are consciously breaking them. We need to look after the fish in our ocean and ensure we're not taking more than we need. If we take too many fish or fish that are too small then eventually there will be no fish left!

Have you ever been fishing before?
    Billy.
