Summer Learning Journey Week 1 - Activities 3

Activity 3:Weird and Wonderful
New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacti are able to survive on as little as 3 millilitres (ml) of water a day. Wow!
Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.
Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?
On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in millilitres (ml).

Maths Problem
3ml x 365 = ?

3ml x 100 = 300ml

300ml x 3 = 900ml

65 - 3ml x 60 = 180 , 3ml x 5 = 15. 180+15 = 195.

900ml + 195ml = 1095ml

  3. Hi Helena,

Thank you for sharing with us the steps you have taken to solve this problem. It could have been a challenging multiplication problem but you have done a great job by separating the equation into different bits.

I can see that you have carefully thought about the number '365' to divide this into chunks; three one hundreds, sixty and five. This was very clever.

Your final answer is correct, Congratulations! Do you enjoy problem solving? What is your favourite thing about maths and what do you think you'll need to focus on moving forward?

    Bye for now,
    Susie
