Winter Learning Journey-Day 7 Bouns

Bonus: This year two new sports are being added to the Paralympic Games. They are canoeing and triathlon. In the triathlon the athletes must swim 750 metres, cycle for 20 kilometres, and then run for 5 kilometres. Paralympic athletes may also compete in other sports including archery, boccia, football, judo, powerlifting, rowing, sailing, swimming, sitting volleyball, track cycling, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis. To learn more about all of the Paralympic sports, please visit the 2016 Paralympic Games website.

Imagine that you are on the Paralympic Committee and you have been asked to create one new sport to add to the competition for this year. Use your awesome imagination to design a brand new Paralympic sport. Please remember that some of the athletes will not be able to walk or run and others may be blind or deaf. On your blog, please write:

  1. The name of your sport,
  2. A brief description of how you play the sport, and
  3. Three rules for the sport

My name of my sport is Wheelchair basketball.
How to play the sport is you sit on the wheelchair and play basketball.
The three rules are no falling off the wheel chair, no punching the other people, no kicking the people who is holding the ball.

  2. Hi Helena,

You have chosen a great sport for the final activity. Wheelchair basketball is a very high paced, exciting and challenging event. I have actually tried it once or twice and I found it much harder than regular basketball. You have to rely on your arms to move you around (rather than your legs) and my arms got really tired, really quickly. Ouch!

Of the two sports, regular basketball and wheelchair basketball, which one would you prefer to play?

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge 'congratulations' to you as well. You have done so, so well with this journey. I've enjoyed reading all of your posts and commenting as I've gone along. You should be really proud of everything that you have accomplished. Well done :)

I hope that you will consider joining our holiday blogging programme again next summer. It will be called a Summer Learning Journey and it will have a series of brand new activities for you to try. It should be really fun!

    Best, Rachel :)
